With an all-around shortage of guns and ammo my FFL dealer pointed me toward this gun. I wasn’t aware of Leadstar’s reputation until after purchasing, but am very, very happy. In full disclosure, this is my first rifle, though I own several handguns, some being customized.

When I first held this rifle in my hand I could see that there the finish was excellent. I was a little baffled by the look of the 17″ hand guard. But after shooting it I like it a lot. It lets me put an iron sight way out in front and gives me more hand room. Beyond that, the first thing I noticed was the smoothness of the trigger, Between 6-7 pounds, but very little trigger creep and then BANG. Extraordinarily smooth for a stock trigger.

Two features of this rifle are a few quick disconnect ports along the upper and one on the stock providing multiple places for QD connectors and sling placement. I was a little disappointed that the MFT stock had only one QD port on the bottom of the stock, sitting 2″-7″ behind the grip, depending on how far you extend the stock. MFT has room and should have put one more QD port on the side of the handle toward the rear. I’ve circumented that issue by attaching my sling with a QD connector on the bottom, then taking the loop of the sling and putting on part of the loop on the outside of the stock and one on the inside, as if I’d threaded the webbing through one of the provided slots. You can use thread the web through the vertical or horizontal slots that you can see in the photos. I just like to be able to quickly remove the sling.

As for additional places to mount my sling and other stuff, the guard is replete with M-Lok slots. I have two M-Lok QD port attachments that I’ve put on the guard to give me more sling mounting options. They came with the QD connectors, so why let them go to waste? Interestingly, I have one mounted along the side of the barrel about where my left hand would grip, and it’s in a position where I can lay my index finger over it and it just gives me this little extra bit of grip security as I wrap my thumb over the top. I put it there to add a possibility for sling positioning, but as I have other preferred mounting locations I don’t need it for that, but I’ll leave it there as it’s a good substitute for one of those extra attachements folks put on the bottom of the upper to pull the rifle in more easily. I don’t think I’ll be needing one of those.

I’ve shot it twice in the two weeks I’ve owned it and put about 150 rounds through it. I’ve mounted a Holosun HS515GM red dot on it and at the end of two practice sessions I was free standing at 65′ (the length of the local range) and consistently putting 2″ groups on the target, firing in succession as soon as I could reacquired the target, getting faster with each group. Some rounds had touched or gone through the same hole. At this point the gun is better than I am as I’m really just getting used to the gun and it getting used to me. I had purchased some BUIS, and my groups didn’t spread all that much from the red dot.

If I have anything negative to say about this Grunt is that the Magpul mag that comes with it doesn’t seat so easily and click in so positively. Sometimes it clicks with a little effort. Sometimes it seats securely withou any identifying click. Sometimes it doesn’t seat at all and I have to massage it into place. I do not have that issue with my aluminum mil-spec mag donated to me by a buddy. I have ordered Okay Surefeed mags for and if needed will use the Magpul firstso that I don’t have to worry during reload. I’m thinking the gun is made with good tolerances and the mag catch just has to break in like the rest of the gun?

The stock… Having never owned a rifle before, I’m a bit torn. The L-shaped stock is minimalist and light weight. It’s well made and solid. However I can see the potential for the open end to snag on things, though I haven’t experienced that yet in practice. BUT the flip side of that is that it allows you to hang it from the stock. I have some large heavy-duty carabiners which attach to a closet rod. I find this extremely convenient for putting it out of view and still having extremely quick access. Again, I haven’t had any experience with anything else yet, but don’t see a need to change the stock. As advertised, it has a six-position adjustment.

For the price, I’m telling you folks, this gun is a sleeper. If you’re not a competitive shooter I don’t think there is a NEED to upgrade a thing. About the only thing that I could possibly thing of at this moment would be possibly ambidextrous charging handle and safety though they really aren’t needed unless you shoot lefty.

So that’s pretty much it folks. Bottom line… I think I could spend hundreds more and not get a better rifle than I have right now. JMO
